if i go for a breast exam who do i call obgyn or my normal GP?

I’m sorry to hear about your aunt having died of breast cancer. I’m sure this could make you quite anxious.

A breast exam is not just supposed to look for lumps, but you want to look for changes that you have over more than one menstrual cycle. So say that you have something that you have one month and it’s gone the next, then comes back another month — that’s probably just a cyst that came and went from hormones.

You want to only exam your breasts ONCE a month — not more than once — and right at the END of your period, not before. This is due to the hormonal changes in your breasts from your period.

Either your regular physician or your gynecologist can give you breast exams. Tell them about your family history. You may be able to have genetic testing, and you could definitely speak to a genetic counselor regarding your personal risks due to your famiy history.

Breast cancer can be found in younger women, but it is quite rare in someone at your age. It’s good to be followed by a physician, but try not to be scared all the time about it. It’s not good to live in fear.

As far as the numbness, I don’t really know, but it doesn’t sound overly concerning.

Good luck to you!
